Set at the base of Hickory Nut Gorge, Lake Lure hands us properties where the ground itself is the obstacle: gorge walls above the water, rocky and steep, with a road that might run above or below but almost never both. Autumn olive and multiflora rose thrive precisely because that inaccessibility keeps anyone from cutting them back regularly. A stand rooted from a roadside seed source or an old planted hedge can bury the rhododendron along a bank and start working its way toward the water view within just a few seasons.
This is exactly the terrain the remote-controlled mulcher exists for. It handles grades no conventional machine could touch safely, which means the growth comes off the slope and gets mulched right where it stood, with nothing carried up to the road and nothing set on fire.
